Chondromalacia Patellae

What the hell is Chondromalacia Patellae you ask? Well it’s Runner’s Knee and after Googling for my symptoms, I think this is what I have.

At first I was a bit surprised, a sports related injury…to me? Other than the usual bruises, scrapes, and soreness, I’ve never really had a genuine sports related injury. I thought it was pretty exciting, especially since I was the fat kid that usually got picked last.

Well I woke up yesterday and my knee felt 100 times better than it did the night before, which was great, I almost went running, but figured it was a stupid idea, mainly because my parents over-reacted the day before and started throwing out words like “lifetime injury” and “surgery”. Weirdos.

So I’m going to wait until next week to do anything strenuous on my right leg, hopefully everything will be super-back-to-normal-fixed-in-working-condition by then. If not, then sigh, I’ll go to a doctor because I told my mother I would. What a pain.

Well, at least let me tell you what a Runner’s Knee actually is…

…is a degenerative condition of the cartilage surface of the back of the knee cap, or patella…The condition may result from…chronic friction between the patella and the groove in the femur through which it passes during motion of the knee.

So, what are you supposed to be doing to prevent it from happening again? Or to stop the degenerative condition?

If you ask me, I think you should do alternative exercises… like biking, or hiking… When you come up to Keene and we’ll do all that!

To prevent it from happening and/or heal the knee, I believe it’s…take anti-inflammatory medine (ibuprofen, etc), put on a wet-towel/ice-pack after running, and work out your quadriceps (swimming, biking, leg excerices), and other stuff I don’t remember. Oh yeah, a knee brace too. And rest the leg for some weeks.

So far I’m doing the knee brace and medicine thing, I’m probably going to go biking for a couple weeks instead of running, so that the cartilage can get nice and smooth again hopefully.

As for alternative exercises…I’ll stick to chronic masturbation thank you, none of that new age hiking crap for me. Hmm, hope I don’t get tennis elbow.

Well as like yourself. I too have CMP level 3 to be exact. Which pretty much means surgery will eventually happen. When you go to the doc to talk to him about what you think you have with the CMP stuff. ask him to require a CT scan of the femoral/patellar tracking. this shows up alot better than with a MRI. It’s nice to work in an Osteopathic practice due to part I can get info pretty quickly with some of the D.O’s I work with.
hope this somewhat helps ya out.
