I’m slowly replacing my entire digital music collection from MP3s (and the very few AACs) to FLAC. First of all, it’s slow because I have re-rip all my CDs, and second, it takes up so much more space on my hard drive. But it’s worth it! Lossless, perfect CD quality sound. No more worrying about gaps between MP3 tracks (which I haven’t in many years, thanks to LAME and Winamp, but still…) and wondering if any of my tracks could use a higher bitrate (which for most I haven’t, thanks again LAME).

As for portability it works out great too, even though it’s slower copying files to my iPod, Winamp has a plug-in that will automatically transcode my digital music into a smaller file size while transferring (hell with you iTunes). Like I really need super high quality music while using a portable music player. And FLAC -> MP3 is always better than MP3 -> MP3.

I just need a bigger hard drive, more time, and more online backup space. It may be time to look into Rockbox too…
